David Gene Newton, 72, Kokomo, passed away at 6:35 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital, in Kokomo. He was born March 4, 1936, in Kokomo, to Marice Newton and Lawanna Nadine (Hooks) Moberly. On Sept. 27, 1956, in Kokomo, he married Carolyn Sue (Broadley) Newton. He retired from Haynes. He was one of two people at Haynes that mic’d and inspected all the nuts and bolts that were used in the refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty. He retired from the United States Marine Corps, serving tours in Lebanon in 1958, Okinawa, Korea, from 1953 to 1954, and Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He received a letter signed by President Richard Nixon commending him on going above and beyond the call of duty in Vietnam. He had White House clearance. He received the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, RVN Civil Action Medal (1st Class) with Palm, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Medal with four stars (6th), National Defense Service Medal, AFE Medal and Rifle Expert. He was active in Boys and Girl Scouts. He was a member of the Eagles, VFW and Faith United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Sisters, Twisters, and Misters, a spinning club, where he did many spinning demonstrations in the state. He was a member of the young America Lions Club. He was well respected by all that knew him. Along with his mother and wife, Gene is survived by four sons, Mark Newton, Nebraska, Gregory Newton, California, Brian Newton and wife Dorie, Arizona, and Mike Newton and wife Angie, Kokomo; two daughters, Leesa Hedger and husband Michael, Ohio, and Kimberly Sitzes and husband Dave, Logansport; two brothers, Richard Newton and wife Susan, North Carolina, and Jacque Newton and wife Rosemary, Florida; a sister, Janet Eaton and husband Darryl, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Marice Newton; grandson, Johnathan Newton; still born twin sisters, Marilyn and Carolyn Newton; and daughter-in-law, Jodie Newton.
