Services for Alma Josephine Newman Mears, 73, 1116 W. Edwards St., are pending with West Funeral Home. She died March 7 at a local nursing home.

She was born Dec. 5, 1914, in Santa Anna, Texas, and was raised in Portales. She was married in Portales on June 30, 1934. Following her marriage, she made her home in Clovis. She moved to Carlsbad in 1952 where she had a drapery contract with Sears Department Store for many years. After the store closed, she continued to sew draperies in her home. She was a member of the Central Christian Church, Guadalupe Medical Center Auxiliary, Extension Club, Friendly Helpers and the Senior Citizens Recreation Center.

Survivors include one son, Max Mears, Sebastopol, Calif.; three daughters, LaVerne Hickman and Linda Gerrells, both of Carlsbad, and Kathy Boyd, Albuquerque; two brothers, William Newman, Hobbs, John R. Newman, Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Idamaye Sanders, Roswell; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

MEARS

Services for Alma Josephine Newman Mears, 73, 1116 W. Edwards St., are scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. in West Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Catrett, Central Christian Church, is to officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.

She died March 7 in a local nursing home.

Pallbearers include: Bill Belden, E.D. Terry, Dan Gross, Doug Holden, Marty Melvin, and Allan Pistole.

Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Central Christian Church.
