Gay J. Newman, 89, of Dowling, died Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Battle Creek Health System. She was born April 27, 1920 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Leon and Beatrice (Hartson) Yaw. Gay attended Battle Creek Central High School. During World War II, she worked at the Kellogg Company in the K-Ration and Number 2 departments and then she worked for Security National Bank as an elevator operator. In 1947 Gay returned to the Kellogg Company and worked fourth shift in the packing room until her retirement in January 1982. She has been a resident of Dowling since February 1975. On November 23, 1938 Gay married Richard E. Newman in the rectory of the Episcopal Church in LaGrange, Indiana by the Reverend C. E. Kendall. Richard preceded her in death in September 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nina (Jerry) Doyle in May 2007. Gay is survived by her daughter, Judi Burnham; grandchildren, Dena, Anthony and Andrea Burnham; two great-grandsons, Michael and Jordan, all of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews. She belonged to the Kellogg 25-Year Club, the Kellogg Retiree Association and the Fourth Shift Birthday Group. She enjoyed reading and playing cards. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4:00 p.m. and 6 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Shaw Funeral Home (2838 Capital Ave., SW, Battle Creek). Private services will take place at a later date. Interment, Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may go to a charity of one's choice.
