Born April 11, 1925, in Boston, Mass., to Sumner and Edwina Newcomb, she was the older sister of Elizabeth Newcomb Wetter, who died this past March. Mary grew up in Newtonville but spent summers at Goose Rocks Beach in Maine, where she met the love of her life, Earle Marshall Davis, when she was 14.
Some of Mary's most memorable years were spent at Northfield-Mt. Herman, graduating in 1942. She was always quick to say those years prepared her well for Mount Holyoke and life. She graduated from Mount Holyoke magna cum laude in economics in 1946 and married Earle shortly after. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Mary worked hard to help Earle complete medical school, and they moved to Waterville so he could practice urology at Thayer and Seton Hospitals. She and Earle enjoyed the town's social life as members of the Waterville Country Club for 35 years.
Her daughter Edwina Hastings and her husband Mark from Wilton N.H., their four children, as well as a son Matthew Davis and his wife Angela in Augusta, Ga., survive Mary.
The committal service will be at Arundel Cemetery in Kennebunkport. (Morning Sentinel 6/3/2012)
