Shirley J. Paolino Gilchrist, 73, of 117 West Commonwealth Drive, died Monday in a local hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in South Portland, a daughter of Carl and Susan M. Sullivan Newcomb Gibson, attended South Portland schools and was a graduate of South Portland High School in 1939.
Mrs. Gilchrist was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and was a member of St. Martha's Discussion Group.
She was a Cub Scout den mother, a Blue Bird leader and a Little League mother.
Her first husband, Joseph F. Paolino, died in 1978.
Surviving are her husband of 15 years, Donald H. Gilchrist; two sons, Michael J. of Yarmouth and Joseph Paolino of Windham; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Donna Marie) Kelsen of Portland and Mrs. Alton (Marysue) Thompson of Scarborough; a sister, Mrs. Forest (Bettyjean) Ryder of South Portland; a brother, John L. Newcomb of Peoria, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Friday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
