St. Albans- Mayland G. Newcity, 88, a lifelong resident of Franklin County, mostly in the St. Albans area, passed away Sunday July 25, 2010.

Born on November 14, 1921, in Richford, he was the son of the late Amasa and Dorothy (Todd) Newcity.

In 1940, he was a member of the National Guard Company, A 118th, Quartermaster Unit in St. Albans. He was a WWII Navy Veteran and a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, A.L. for many years and some years as a member of Richford Post # 12.

After the war, Mayland was employed by the Fli Rite School of Aviation as a Flight instructor based at the Warren R. Austin Airport in Swanton. Also was appointed Flight Examiner by the Civil Aeronautics Authority to conduct flight tests for private pilot's license and for sea plane and multiengine ratings. During the 1950's, he was a member of the Burlington Vermont Civil Air Patrol Squadron, and served as Operations Officer, then Executive Officer and 1 year as Squadron Commander. Later he worked for the Central Vermont Railroad as a clerk in various departments and 4 years as a locomotive fireman.

In 1951, he organized, trained and participated with a Drum and Bugle corps sponsored by the Swanton American Legion Post. In 1959, he organized another Drum and Bugle Corps sponsored by Moose Lodge 1090.

Mayland was employed by IBM from 1965 to 1980 mostly in the Accounting Department. From 1960 to 1972, Mayland was a member of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department. After retiring from IBM, he drove school bus for 4 years for Don Bell in Swanton. From 1985 to 1996, he was a voluntary worker for the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging senior meals program at Beth-El Court. He was a western history buff and read many books on the settling of the West. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was still riding at the age of 79. Mayland also took great pleasure in target shooting, and plinking, especially with handguns.

He was a member of Franklin Lodge # 4, F&AM, Champlain Chapter # 1 , Lafayette Commandery # 3, Mt Sinai Temple Shiners', National Rifle Assoc. Gun Owners of America, Highgate Rod and Gun Club, Voirtue 243 40/80, Green Mountain Unit APRA, Law Enforcement Alliance of America, Moose Lodge # 1090, Honorary member of the Vermont Sheriff's Association and St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include several cousins. In addition to his parents, Mayland was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Dunham on December 31, 1999, and his son, Rodney Newcity on March 28, 2010.

A funeral service will be held on Friday July 30, 2010, at 11:00 AM in St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Church Street. A time of visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
