Willard E. Newbern passed from his life to one of peace and comfort Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family, after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 15, 1921, in the Powell Community of Lauderdale County to Maude and Coy Newbern. Mr. Newbern lived and worked in Florence, having a very productive life, always being a role model for all. He was passionate to his family and career, succeeding in the challenges set before him. He was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church for most of his adult life.
After retiring from Reynolds Alloy Company, the Newberns enjoyed traveling the 48 contiguous states and gardening, but primarily spending time with their three children and families.
Mr. Newbern leaves behind his devoted wife of almost 67 years, Drusilla Bendall Newbern; his sister, Millinea Darby; two sons and wives, Clarence E. Newbern and Sharon, and Gerald L. Newbern and Martha; and one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Newbern Hill and Tommy.
He accepted the spouses chosen by his children, considering them his own, loving and committed to the influence they gave to the family. Mr. Newbern rejoiced in each one's accomplishments and shared in their sorrows. He is survived by nine grandchildren, Lisa N. Hulman, Jeff Newbern, Cindy N. Inman, Natalie H. Frazier, Charles Hill III, Stacy N. Noeth, Kim Newbern, Ben Newbern, Josh Newbern and 13 great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all.
Mr. Newbern was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Sabrena Faye Newbern, his parents, Maude and Coy Newbern, and his sister, Helen N. McCormick.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greenview Funeral Home, with service following at 1:30 p.m. Those serving as pallbearers are Jeff Newbern, Ben Newbern, Josh Newbern, Charles Hill, Henry Frazier and Steve McCormick. Honorary bearers will be members of the Tom McDougal Sunday School Class.
Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. John Brock and the Rev. Chris Underwood.
The family extends a special thanks to Tennessee Valley Hospice, Home Instead, Dr. Lyman Mitchell and Dr. William Heaton for the love and care they showed Mr. Newbern and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Highland Baptist Church Building Fund.
