PIONEER LADY CALLED TO REST

Jane Nevins Ashba, daughter of John and Nancy Nevins, was born in Yellow Springs, Iowa March 16, 1849, and died at her home in Russell, Iowa April 30, 1936 at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 14 days.

In the first year of her life she traveled with her parents to California by wagon train in the gold rush of 1849. Her father died soon after their arrival and she and her mother returned east by way of ship around Cape Horn. Later she made her home with two maiden aunts in Indiana, where she grew to young womanhood.

On March 15, 1870 she was united in marriage to Thomas W. Ashba in Tippecanoe county, Indiana. In the early 1870s they came to Lucas county, Iowa locating near Russell, which has since been her home with the exception of one year spent in Kansas.

She was the mother of 10 children six of whom preceded her in death. They are: Narvilla A., Kisiah E., Lettie A., Leila, Lee and an infant son. Her husband preceded her in death in 1918, also a half-sister, Mrs. Clara Allen. The surviving children are: Alphonso Ashba of Russell; Abram Ashba of Ottumwa, Iowa; Mrs. Lena Corthon of Buena Vista, Colorado and Mrs. Pearl Goltry of Russell. There are also 12 grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives.

Mrs. Ashba became identified with the Russell Baptist church in the early history of that organization and her interest was shown by her faithful attendance at the service as long as health permitted.

Hers was a long and active life with mental faculties remaining alert until the last. She was a lover of the things of nature and greatly enjoyed the care of her birds and flowers. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, her neighbors and her many friends.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Baptist church by Rev. A. E. Beals and interment was made in the Russell cemetery.
