Irene Neville Bystrom was born in Lincoln, Neb., on July 1, 1918, and died peacefully at her Holmes Beach, Fla., home on Feb. 1, 2012, with her three children present. Born in the Nebraska Governor's mansion while her father, M. Keith Neville, was governor, Irene grew up in North Platte, Neb., and attended public school in North Platte and Pass-a-Grille and St. Petersburg, Fla.. She earned an Associated Arts Certificate from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., in 1937 and, in 1939, her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Nebraska, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After graduation, she was selected to be a countess for the 1940 Aksarben Ball. Irene taught school in Ashland, Neb., before moving to Los Angeles in 1940. In California, she met Roy Victor Bystrom, a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. They were married in Las Vegas, Nev., on July 25, 1942. After the war, they lived in Roy's hometown of Longview, Wash., before returning to North Platte to raise their family. An avid sportswoman, Irene enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with her father. She won the Nebraska Ladies State Skeet Championship in 1964. In 1981, Irene joined with her three sisters – Mary Nel Sieman, Frances Newberry and Virginia Robertson – in donating the Fox Theater building, which their father had built, to the North Platte community as the Neville Center for the Performing Arts. A lifelong Democrat, Irene was active in all levels of the Nebraska Democratic Party. Irene served as co-chair of the Nebraskans for Robert Kennedy campaign in 1968 and attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In 2006, she published her memoir, TAGGING ALONG, as a gift to her children. Irene is survived by her three children: Patricia Trowbridge (Daniel) of Coronado, Calif.; Keith Bystrom (Dianne) of Ames, Iowa; and William Bystrom (Jeannie) of Holmes Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Mollie Stansbury-Lecomte (Ludovic) of Paris, France; Christopher Bystrom of Chicago, IL; Elizabeth Bystrom of Ames, Iowa; Logan, Connor and Trevor Bystrom of Holmes Beach, Fla.; and one great grandchild, Prudence Irene Lecomte of Paris, France.
