Effie Marie "Ree" Cawthorne (1920 - 2011)
Effie Marie Nettles Cawthorne, 91, entrepreneur and beloved mother, entered rest Monday, May 9, 2011. Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Baker Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Interment: Cedar Hill Memorial Park. Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Marie was born March 12, 1920, to Rufus and Lillie Mae Davenport Nettles. She was a graduate of historic I.M. Terrell High School and attended Sam Houston College in Austin. Marie worked as a beauty instructor, beautician and shop owner, florist and ceramic artist, and owned a sandwich shop. A member of Baker Chapel since age 10, she was a class leader, member of the Women's Missionary Society, church school and Daughters of Baker. She affiliated with Barbara Williams Federated Club and women's auxiliary of the Dining Car Waiters and Pullman Car Porters. Marie was a fun-loving, lively and personable woman who loved travel, games, fishing, gardening, cooking and socializing. Her husband of 43 years, John Earl Cawthorne, died in 1982.
Survivors: Her devoted daughters, Mary Lylethe Cawthorne Hudson and Wanda Cawthorne Williams; grandchildren, Juan Nichols, Shaun Nichols, Lylethe Herbette Moore, Latricia Spencer(Leon), Shauntrelle McIntyre (Anthony) and Diana Williams; great-grandchildren, Daniel Richardson, Ron Nichols, Haley Mayberry, Courtney Spencer, TreVon Spencer and Ashton McIntyre; four great-great-grandchildren; a host of other family members; and many friends.
