EATON, Colo. - Helen Virginia (Nelson) Carlson, 84, of Eaton died Monday, April 1, 2013, in Eaton.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eaton Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Eaton Evangelical Free Church. Moser Funeral Service in Evans is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Bertrand, Neb., to J. Fred and Helen L. Nelson.
On Oct. 14, 1955, she married William Carlson in the Belgian Congo. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Daniel and Karen of Yaoundé, Cameroon, James and Kathleen of Lyon, France, Virginia and John Aiken of Colorado Springs, and Karen and Thomas Barnes of Minden, Neb.; 18 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers, Howard and Raymond, both of Bertrand; and many other relatives.
Helen grew up on the family farm north of Bertrand and graduated from Bertrand High School in 1946. She attended Trinity College in Chicago and received her bachelor's degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1955.
She and her husband were married at the Tandala Mission in the Belgian Congo. They served for 20 years in Congo and returned to settle in Eaton in 1974. Helen was a postal clerk in Ault from 1977 until 1996.
Helen was an active member of the Eaton Evangelical Free Church, the Eaton Pioneer Society and the Swedish Heritage Society of Northern Colorado.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, LeRoy and Willard; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Carlson.
