From the Holston Conference Journal - 1952

Mrs. Sallie P. Hurley was born March 16, 1866, at the Mouth of Wilson, Grayson County, Virginia. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Niekirk. She was married to Reverend David P. Hurley, a Methodist Minister of the Holston Conference July 17, 1889, at the Mouth of Wilson, by the Reverend S. E. Hawk.
Mrs. Hurley was a faithful Christian woman in her services to her family, her church and her God. She travelled the path of a Methodist Minister's family, moving from one circuit to another and was always a great help to the people they served. Some of the places her husband and she served were Independence Circuit, Spring Valley Circuit. Lead Mines Circuit, Williamson, West Virginia. Saltville, and later Reverend D. P. Hurley was made presiding elder of Tazewell and Radford Districts.
Mrs. Hurley was a good mother as well as a faithful helpmate and able assistant to her husband. She was the mother of two sons and four daughters, Blanche, Radford, Virginia; Dwight W., Rockville, Maryland; Wilie Neal, Gaithersburg, Maryland; Mrs. C. M. Peters, Richmond, Virginia; Mrs. Wally Levi, Radford. Virginia; and Mrs. W. A. Vest, Jr. Radford, Virginia.
Mrs. Hurley had three interesting hobbies and did a good job in each—painting, crocheting and gardening.
The last years of Mrs. Hurley's life were spent in Radford, Virginia. She was a faithful member of Central Methodist Church. She was a life member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and Class Mother of the Lif e and Bible Sunday School Class in her church. Even though physically unable to attend services regularly, she never lost her keen interest in the church and its work. She had a deep concern always for her pastor and his family and did all she could to encourage and help them.
On June 26, 1952, in the Community Hospital, Radford, Virginia, she slipped away into the sleep that opens the gate to God's presence. The funeral services were conducted in Central Methodist Church by her pastor. Reverend H. B. Tiller, assisted by Reverend Harrell Russell, Pastor Grove Avenue Methodist Church, in the presence of a sympathetic congregation. Burial was in Pulaski, Virginia, beside the grave of her late husband, the Reverend David P. Hurley.
