Roberta N. Hoover, 85, Epworth Manor Apartments, 925 S. Lincoln Ave., Apt. 217, Tyrone, died Tuesday evening at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. She was born in Tyrone, daughter of Charles Forrest and Esther Ruth (Stonebraker) Nearhoof. She married Ernest M. Hoover March 21, 1944, at Camp Tyson, Tenn. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Cindy Bitner (Stephen) of Summerdale; two grandchildren: Kacy and Matthew Bitner; and a great-grandchild, Caleb Bitner. She was preceded in death by four sisters. Roberta was a 1942 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. After graduating from high school, she worked at Miller Bros. Co. for two years. She was secretary to the principal of Tyrone Area High School for 16 years and served in other various offices at the Tyrone Area High School for 17 years, retiring June 6, 1986. She was a member of Tyrone Church of the Good Shepherd, having served many years as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the primary department. She sang in the church choirs and was a lay delegate to the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church for many years. She loved her church and all the work that needed to be done there. She also was a member of Chapter 288 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Tyrone Church of the Good Shepherd. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Susan Halverstadt officiating. Interment at Bald Eagle Cemetery.
