Bernice was born March 28, 1915, the oldest of nine children, to Gust and Winifred (Kertscher) Petersen of Brady, Mont.
She attended East Community School and later graduated from Brady High School. She often commented on how she had read every book in the Brady School Library. Bernice graduated from Beauty School in Great Falls, Mont.

Bernice and Edgar lived in Brady, Neihart, the Sweet Grass Hills, Cut Bank and later retired in Essex, Mont.
After Edgar's passing, Bernice lived with her brother, Bruce Petersen in Brady. She later moved to Lewistown to live with her daughter.
Bernice enjoyed camping, square dancing, painting pictures, crafts, the mountains and politics. Most of all she enjoyed her entire family. She was most proud of the fact that she met and knew all of her cousins. She created numerous notebooks recording her family history.
