SALEM - Mildred C. Hampton, 92, long time resident of the Salem area, passed away on October 17 in Salem Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Muddy Valley (near McMinnville, OR) on April 15, 1920 to Earl and Olive Murray. The Murrays were an Irish Pioneer family who came to Oregon in a wagon train before Oregon was a state.
Mildred was the oldest of four children who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen W. Hampton and daughter, Bonnie Lee. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Hampton of Redmond, and her sons, James Hampton of Salem and Earl Hampton of Gates. She is also survived by five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mildred and her family lived for many years northwest of Salem on Bethel Heights Road. She worked as a rural route mail carrier and always had a huge garden with enough to load down any visitor with fresh fruit and vegetables. She was an excellent seamstress, and made many lap quilts for others. She loved to dance and she and Glen belonged to several square dance clubs. Mildred never met a stranger and enjoyed meeting new people.
When in their 70's and 80's Mildred and Glen cut oak wood and sold it in the Salem area. Her family is grateful for the example set by their parents; a strong work ethic and genuine love and care for others.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 27 at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen 1350 Commercial Street, SE Salem. Mildred is being placed to rest at Restlawn Memory Gardens with a Private Internment. In Lieu of flowers please make contributions to Dornbechers Children's Hospital, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd., Portland, OR 97239 in Mildred's name.
