He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 8, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a welder and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-40877 took off, with a crew of 10, on a training mission. They crashed, for an unknown reason, in the sea just north of Buena Vista Island, Solomon Islands during the war.

John was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.
