James William Murphy Obt.
Funeral services for Mr. James William Murphy, 85, of Cookeville, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 4, 2001, at Collegeside Church of Christ in Cookeville with Bro. Kelly Campbell officiating.
Burial was in the Algood Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Veterans Honor Guard consisting of American Legion Post 135, VFW Post 6277, and VVA Chapter 741. Hooper and Huddleston Funeral Home of Cookeville was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Murphy died Friday, February 2, 2001, at Masters Health Care Center in Algood.
He was an Assistant Postmaster, retiring from Cookeville in 1975, and a naval officer during World War II, serving one year in the Atlantic and two years in the Pacific. He was wounded at Iwo Jima and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a charter member of Collegeside Church of Christ where he served as elder for 26 years. He was a member of CookevillePutnam County Library Board and American Legion Post 135 and was active in the Red Cross and local genealogy. Born April 17, 1915, in Hilham, he was the son of the late Walter and Sarah Etta (Langford) Murphy.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Swallows) Murphy, Cookeville; a daughter and soninlaw, Ann and Robert Breeding, Morristown; a son and daughterinlaw, Bill and Alice Murphy, Trophy Club, TX; a sister, Mildred (Murphy) Bilbrey, Lebanon; and five grandchildren, Libby Breeding, Erin (Murphy) Hensley, Jonathan Murphy, Patrick Murphy, and Sean Murphy.
Pallbearers were Ross Compton, F.B. Toline, John Wall, Jim Hicks, Davis Watts, and Bernard Keys.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were past and present elders and deacons of Collegeside Church of Christ, Dr. Don Grisham, Sam and Roy Gibbons, Jo Ed Hunter, Bill Masters, James Kuykendall, Freddy Maxwell, Robert Paul Judd, Verble Carrington, Virgil Benson, and any other former postal employees from 1933 to 1975.
