Funeral services were held Friday, December 3, 1982, in Little Cedar, Iowa, for Mary Barker, age 87, of Osage, Iowa, who died on Tuesday, November 30, 1982 at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital, following a stroke. Rev. Bruce Wittern officiated at the service, with burial in the Liberty Cemetery, Little Cedar. Champion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Ann Murphy was born on June 28, 1895, to Mintee Cummings Murphy and Albert J. Murphy, on a farm near New Haven. She graduated from eighth grade at the Mossville School and later graduated from high school at Riceville, in 1915.
On April 21, 1918, Mary Murphy and George W. Barker were united in marriage at the Baptist Church in Riceville, and made their home at the Barker family farm south of Little Cedar. Her husband George passed away on June 17, 1944.
In the spring of 1957 Mary moved to Osage and worked at the Old Central School in the kitchen until her retirement. She was the last surviving member of the Murphy family and a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Little Cedar.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George; one daughter, Marjorie and one son, Robert; two sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by two sons, Gregory of Little cedar, and Dean of Osage; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Helen) Young of Osage; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
