Frances Hope Haynes Stanley Murphy, 99 years old, passed away on March 2, 2016. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral Home of Marion.

Frances was born January 15, 1917, in Roanoke, Virginia to Orran Leonard Haynes and Annie Hope Williams Haynes. Frances was the Third of seven children to Orran and Annie. Three died in childhood (Callie Elizabeth, Norris Ann, and Nancy Louise). Her other siblings were Edwin Carlton Haynes, Jessie Marie Mays, and Blanche Lorene Newman. Frances spent her early childhood in Snow Creek, Virginia, outside Martinsville, where the family later moved. She graduated from Martinsville HS., and attended Blackstone College for Women on a scholarship from her church along with her sister Marie. The sisters worked in the dining room to make money to pay expenses.

Frances married Morgan Stanley prior to WWII and they moved to Long Island, NY (Patchogue), where he worked for R. J. Reynolds. She had fond memories of her time on Long Island, and being able to celebrate New Years’ Eve 1940 at Times Square. Morgan was killed while landing on the beach at Salerno, Italy. Frances maintained a close, lifelong relationship with the Stanley Family.

After the War, she married Neill Carmichael Murphy, Jr. on June 8, 1946, in Darlington, SC. Neill and Edwin, Frances’ brother, had become close friends while stationed together in the Pacific Theater during the War. The newlywed couple moved to Washington, DC, and then Springfield, Va. They had four Children. Neill Carmichael, III, and Leonard Carlton were born in Washington; Edwin Haynes and Ellen Ann were born on Guam, where the family lived from 1952-1958. While on Guam, they provided housing and support for Joshua Harou while he attended the territorial college. He became their ‘adopted’ fifth child.

Neill and Frances were in Saigon during the Vietnam War while he worked for the State Dept. Frances volunteered with a program aimed at helping the street children who were left homeless by the war. Neill died in 1992 after 46 years of marriage. After Neill’s death, Frances traveled extensively with friends, family, or by herself to such places as England, Scotland, the Canadian Rockies by train (at 90), California, and the Holy Land.

Frances always found a way to be active in the life of her Church, whether in Martinsville, Springfield, or Ormond Beach. She was a life-long Methodist and instilled her love of God and desire to serve others in her children and those around her. She was the religious center of the family, showing her children and grandchildren by her faith and her actions the true meaning of God’s love.

Frances is survived by her sister, Lorene; four children, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
