Contributor: jm (47602678)DIASSELLISS Mary Louise Murphy Diasselliss died on Saturday November 10, 2007 at the age of 86. Funeral services will be held at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 12:00 Noon. Visitation 9:30 AM until service time. Mary Lou was born on December 10, 1920 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was the devoted wife to John Louis Diasselliss II who died in 2005 prior to Hurricane Katrina. Mary Lou and her family moved to New Orleans when Swift and Company transferred her father William Murphy. The family of five girls and four boys settled into Lakeview where they merged into the local community and established an active social life. Mary Lou attended St. Dominic School and Mount Carmel Academy. Before World War II, she and her social circle enjoyed parties, picnics and watching her future husband John and his friends play ball by the West End canal. But it was when Mary Lou and John married that she came into her element as a mother and role model. Mary Lou created a family nest and code of conduct that was quite special. Carolyn was their first child and the first grandchild of the Diasselliss and Murphy families. John Louis III (nicknamed Johnny) was born while John was surveying Jamaica with the Corps of Engineers for construction of a naval base and airfield. Her children Gail, Michael, and Nancy, came in succession two years apart. Then, in 1950, James (Jimmy) was born and, in 1957, their last child Kenneth (Kenny) joined the family. Throughout those successions of births, Mary Lou was also busy creating a loving and caring environment in the Diasselliss home. She nurtured the seven children to become happy, productive and healthy members of society. By her example and through expressions of love, she taught them to laugh, work hard and have fun. She advocated living every day to the fullest, but also to take the time to enjoy your family, friends and surroundings. Her girls were treated to the talent of the clothes that she sewed for them and her boys had a formidable foe with her card playing. As her grandchildren were born, she practiced perfect love and showed her depth of experience in caring for the young. In her later years, her love of sports saw her winning at Fantasy Football, attending the offering of sports events in New Orleans and cheering for her grandchildren's teams. In April of 2005, she lost her husband to cancer and in August lost her home of more than fifty years to Hurricane Katrina. She bounced back, as a mother of seven is trained to do, calling herself a homeless person, and finally settled back in New Orleans by City Park in 2006. In the spring of 2007, she experienced severe back pain and Stage 4 cancer was diagnosed. Her daughters Gail and Carolyn became her primary caregivers, with the rest of the children adjusting to the fact that the heart of their family would be leaving them. As she lay dying, her strength of spirit and character, plus her sense of humor, surrounded her and those who sat with her to experience the last offerings of her abounding love. The surviving children are Sister Ursula (Carolyn) Diasselliss O.Carm., John Louis Diasselliss III, Gail Diasselliss Lopez, Michael Alan Diasselliss of Huntsville, AL, Nancy Diasselliss Corbeille of Huntsville, AL, James Paul Diasselliss of Atlanta, GA, and Kenneth Peter Diasselliss. Sons-in-law are Warren E. Lopez, Jr. and Richard E. Corbeille; daughters-in-law are Peggy Breaux Diasselliss, Kim Diasselliss, and Tamela Rushing Diasselliss. Grandchildren are Warren E. Lopez III, Deborah Lopez Borrello, Mandy Diasselliss, Marc Diasselliss (deceased), John Louis Diasselliss IV, Judith Diasselliss, Christopher Corbeille, Leon Corbeille, Jenna Diasselliss, Nicholas Diasselliss, and Jaime Diasselliss. Great-Grandchildren are Jake Borrello, John Louis Diasselliss V and Amelia Grace Diasselliss. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mount Carmel, P. O. Box 476, Lacombe, LA, 70445-0476. To view and sign the Family Guestbook, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com
