ROCK ISLAND — A memorial service to Celebrate the Life of John Dennis Murphy, 60, a resident of Rock Island and a former resident of Davenport and Prescott, Arizona, will be 6 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011, at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Private burial will be held at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends Friday at the funeral home from 4 until 6 p.m. There will be a brief prayer service at 6 p.m. followed by sharing and special music to celebrate "John's" life. Following his wishes cremation rites have been accorded.
John was born October 2, 1950, in Davenport, a son of William T. and Mary Frances (Tobin) Murphy.
He graduated from Assumption High School, class of 1969; and then graduated from Scott Community College with an Associate's Degree in Motorcycle Mechanics. While attending Assumption High School, he excelled in sports and held the pole vaulting record for many years. He was also a member of the All Star Little League and Pony League teams in Davenport. In later years he enjoyed snow skiing, water skiing and sailing.
John found his true calling in life after exploring a few different careers. He was always a talented musician and he followed his heart and his dreams and became a singer and song writer. He was a very accomplished musician, and had a music career in Prescott, Arizona, for over 20 years. He was always one to give back to those in need and volunteered his musical talents for local charity fundraisers here and in Arizona.
John was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend — never knowing a stranger. He was a generous and selfless caregiver. He was always first to step up to help a family member, friend or stranger; whether it be with a ride to the doctor or just someone who cared, like John, that could sit with a terminally ill person who was needing comfort and compassion at the end stage of life.
He moved back to the Quad Cities six years ago to be closer to family, and to his mother, whom he was very devoted to. During this time he assisted in a group home for men with special needs. John's quick wit and humor helped him make those "special people" feel truly special. He treated them with great respect.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in John's name to a memorial to be established in his name.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Frances Murphy, Davenport; a daughter, Mellissa (Dustin) Ward, Bartonville, Illinois; a granddaughter, Sydney Marie; a grandson, Blake; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen Murphy Guest and Walter Guest, Davenport, Mary Janet and Tom Swanson, Blue Grass, Iowa, and Kathleen Murphy Conrad and Michael Conrad, Silvis, Illinois; and a niece and nephews, Cameron (Susie) Conrad, Rachel (Kurtis) Whalen, and Drew (Brandy) Swanson. He was preceded in death by his father, William Murphy, in 1991. May he rest in peace.
