James Carlyle Munk
Salt Lake City - Funeral services for James Carlyle Munk, 85, of 548 Douglas St., Salt Lake City, will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 E. South Temple.
Mr. Munk was the brother of Mrs. Paul K. (LaRue) Walker, Springville.
Mr. Munk died Tuesday of natural causes. He was born Feb. 19, 1888 in Manti, Sanpete County, to Joseph and Elizabeth Crawford Munk. He married Minvera Mickelson on June 9, 1915 in the Manti LDS Temple.
He was a member of the LDS Church. He graduated in the Pioneer class of the Manti High School in May of 1909, then attended University of Utah, where he was graduated with a major in civil engineering and a certificate to teach in Utah secondary schools. He taught mathematics, physics and chemistry in Manti High School for 15 years.
During the summer months Mr. Munk was employed by the Utah State Road Commission surveying for the building of new roads and later working for them full time. During the depression years of 1929-1932 he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. His last employment where he worked until retirement was at Clearfield Naval Depot as an engineer and draftsman.
The family moved to Salt Lake in April 1941 to be near his work.
While living in Manti he was active as a teacher in MIA and priesthood quorum and later served in the Douglas Ward in Salt Lake as a home priesthood teacher.
Survivors include his widow, one son and one daughter, Dr. Carlyle M. Munk, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Clifton (Carol) Horspool, El Monte, Calif.; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Manti City Cemetery.
