Janice E. "Jan" Barnes, 77, of Ashland passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Good Shepherd Home from progressive Alzheimer's disease.
Janice was born in Massillon on April 20, 1934, to Dr. Earl O. and Eva (née Nyhart) Mumper.
She had been a resident of Ashland for the past 56 years, moving here from Danville.
Janice graduated from the Mount Carmel School of Nursing as a registered nurse and worked as a registered nurse for Samaritan Hospital for 40 years.
Jan was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Ashland, United Methodist Women, and was a Sunday school teacher for the primary department and also the adult Sunday school class. Jan and Charles were original organizers of the Friendship Sunday School Class. She also organized and directed Barnabus Ministry at First United Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Registered Nurses Association, Mount Carmel Alumni, and had worked with the American Heart Association, the Diabetes Association and the Ashland County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She organized a local 4-H Club in Ashland, worked with parents of Dale-Roy School students, reorganized the local Gideons Auxiliary and was a member of Ashland Symphony Women's League.
On Aug. 27, 1955, Janice married Charles W. Barnes, who survives her.
She is also survived by three daughters, Kimberly (Bill) Bockoven of Pulaski, Tenn.; Karen (David) Baker of Chicago, Ill.; Carol Lynn Barnes at home; and two grandsons, Benjamin (Jacqueline) Bockoven and Nick Bockoven.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant brother, Richard Mumper.
Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Bilkert officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, at Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the services at First United Methodist Church on Saturday.
Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery near Danville with the funeral procession leaving the church at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805; First United Methodist Church, 220 Sandusky St.,, Ashland, Ohio 44805; Gideons International, P.O.
