Burney B. Mullens, 80, of Riesel, Texas, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, at Lakeshore Church of Christ with Tom Keener officiating. Burial will follow at Riesel Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.

Burney was born in Riesel, Texas, to the late William James Mullens and Minnie Louise (Burney) Mullens. He graduated from Riesel High School and attended 4-C College in Waco. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1952.

Burney married Joyce Gilbert on Sept. 25, 1953, in Riesel. He worked for General Tire and Rubber Company, in Waco, retiring with 29 years of service. After his retirement, he went back to school and got his peace officers certification and worked for the McLennan County Sheriff Department for 15 years. He served as a bailiff for most of those years with the sheriff's department.

Burney was the first Mayor of Riesel, serving in that capacity from 1973 to 1993. He also served as the first Fire Chief in Riesel. He was a member and past president of the Riesel Lions Club and was president of the Riesel Cemetery Association for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Mullens.

Burney is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce Gilbert Mullens; sons, Steve Mullens and wife, Nancy, of Riesel, and Eric Mullens and wife, Christine, of Denver, Colo.; daughters, Cindy Mullens, of Chalk Bluff, and Melody Holecek and husband, Stephen, of Riesel; grandchildren, Joshua, Aaron, and Caleb Mullens, Sarah and Brady Mullens, Holly and Zackery Holecek; and sister, Patsy Johnson, of Elm Mott.
