September 15, 2007. W. Edward Mullen, 78, died Saturday at Sunnyside Care Center, with his loving family at his side. A native of Saranac Lake, he resided in Syracuse for many years.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He had a lifelong love of music and was a graduate of Potsdam School of Music, and he obtained a master's and CAS degree at SU. He was a music teacher at North High School and the Onondaga Nation School and was a local musician who played with the Larry Masters Trio and several local bands. He was a member of Musicians Local 78. After his retirement he obtained a computer science associate's degree and audited music courses at OCC. He then became a composer/arranger for several local bands.
Family members include his wife, Rita Bottino McCarthy Mullen; children Victoria (James) Mclntyre of Washington, DC, and William and Bradley E. Mullen, both of Syracuse; four grandchildren, Trevor, Jessica, Megan and Zachary; one great-grandchild, McKenzle; a brother, Hugh Mullen of Saranac Lake; stepchildren Michael McCarthy and Kara (Bruce) Cohen; and stepgrandchildren Jamie and Jessie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in PIRRO & SONS FUNERAL HOME and 9 a.m. at St. Daniel's Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 514 Turtle St., Syracuse. Contributions may be made in memory of Edward to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or the Rescue Mission.
