Baker, Blanche I.
December 21, 1916 - August 3, 2004

JANESVILLE/BELOIT— Blanche I. Baker, 87, of Janesville and formerly of Beloit, WI, died on Tuesday morning, Aug. 3, 2004, at Mercy Hospital. She was born in Buffalo County, near Mondovi, WI, on Dec. 21, 1916, daughter of the late Edward and Theresa (Senn) Moy. Blanche graduated salutatorian from Mondovi High School, class of 1933, and later graduated from UW Stout in 1943 with a BS degree in Home Economics and Science. Blanche continued her education and received her Master's Degree in Education in 1960. In 1979 she moved to Janesville from Beloit, where she lived for many years. Blanche was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she was active in the Altar Guild and SOS group. She married Wilber C. Baker on Jan. 24, 1947, in Mt. Vernon, IL, and he preceded her in death in May of 1970. After college Blanche worked for Crawford County and later Jefferson County as a home demonstration agent before entering the teaching field. She taught at the vocational school in Ft. Atkinson and Johnson Creek School District before starting her teaching career in Janesville in 1953. She taught at the former Janesville High School and later Jos. A. Craig High School, retiring in 1981, teaching Home Economics and serving as department chairperson. She was instrumental in implementing two courses while in Janesville: Money Education and Family Living. She was a member and past president of both the Janesville Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma, and member and past treasurer of The Women's Club. She also was a member of WREA, past board member of the Tuesday Morning Optimist Club, and she volunteered at Mercy Hospital. Blanche was an avid bowler, bridge player and world traveler. Her most outstanding trip was around the world with her daughter on her 80th birthday. They flew around Mt. Everest and saw the Taj Mahal. Blanche always shared her memorable stories and pictures of her trips with many of her friends, with the same enthusiasm that she had in the classroom. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Stauffacher of Janesville; a grandson, Nicholas (Kara) Stauffacher, and 2 great-grandchildren, Haley and Olivia, all of Madison, WI. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 409 E. Court St., with Fr. Charles Payson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Park Cemetery, Mondovi, WI. Visitation will be on Thursday morning from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Memorials may be made in Blanche's name to Trinity Episcopal Church or to Rotary Gardens. Assisting with arrangements is the WHITCOMB-LYNCH-OVERTON FUNERAL HOME.
