Son of James Hammack and Ellen McSweeney. Enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and served during World War II in the American campaign, Philippine Liberation, Asiatic Pacific Post-WWII occupation, China Service, United Nations, and the Korean War assigned with the Marines. He mainly served as a land, aviation and sea photographer, as well as a combat cameraman. Retired from military duty in 1967.
