Dr. Robert W. Mouser, age 82, passed away on July 22nd, 2013. He was born on October 21, 1931 in Indianapolis to the late Dr. Sylvan and Evelyn Shipman Mouser. Dr. Mouser lived a remarkable life of service to his country, his patients and his community. He had an undeniable passion for medicine, learning and collecting and he was devoted to his family.
Robert graduated from Shortridge High School and received degrees from the Seminary of Laval University in Quebec, Wabash College, Indiana University, and Indiana University School of Medicine. He was one of the youngest medical doctors at that time, graduating from Medical School at the age of 22. Robert established his private Family Medicine practice in Broad Ripple in 1957, later serving his patients as Broad Ripple Family Physicians and Cornerstone Family Physicians. He was devoted to many generations of patients for over 50 years. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, past President of the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians and past President of the Indianapolis and Indiana Diabetes Associations. He was a former clinical instructor in Family Practice for Indiana University School of Medicine.
In 2004, Robert was appointed ‘One of America's Top Doctors'. He was also very proud of his years as a staff physician at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 1954-1982, where he contributed ideas benefiting safety in auto racing and was a member of the Indianapolis 500 Old Timers Club. Robert was also a medical investigative researcher in the development of Gatorade for its use prior to marketing.
Dr. Robert Mouser had a distinguished military service, serving as Commanding Officer of Medical Air Evacuation in Japan 1955-57, as well as many years as an Air Force reservist.
Robert also enjoyed being active in the community as a member of Indiana Sertoma and Sertoma International. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the National Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity for his service to the fraternity. Robert was also a member of the Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Consistory of the Scottish Rite, York Rite and Murat Shrine. Robert also enjoyed past memberships in Highland Country Club, the Columbia Club, and Meridian Hills Country Club. He was former Director of the Wine Arts Department for the Indiana State Fair. Robert's other interests included antique, stamp, coin and Indianapolis Motor Speedway memorabilia collecting.
Dr Mouser is survived by his loving wife, Donna, and three children, Cindy (Steve) Shamo, Laura Mouser and Brad Mouser, and two step children Duane Elliott and Shawn (Nguyen) Nguyen. Five Grandchildren, Julia Shamo, Simon Shamo, Tyler Wilson, Kate Elliott and Zach Elliott.
