Painter -Sculptor Killed in Collision
George L K Morris a major American abstract painter and sculptor, and a family companion were killed instantly and Morris's wife was seriously injured in the car -truck collision Thursday afternoon (June 26, 1975) at the intersection of Rt 102 and 182 in Stockbridge, Mass. Morris 70, was famous for his geometric abstractions. A graduate of Yale University School of fine arts he studied in 1930 with the renowned Cubist. Fernand Leger and with Amedee Ozenfant, on of the creators of Purism, a more mechanical offshoot of Cubism.
He was also influenced by Hans Arp, a painter and sculptor of the Dada and surrealistic schools. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Lenox Library and the Berkshire Museum. He has had shows in the major museums and galleries of the United States and Europe. Also killed in the crash of Morris' Lincoln Continental and a 10 ton truck driven by Clyde M. Keyes of West Stockbridge was Sophie De Enden, 60, a family companion. Mrs. Morris the former Estelle Frelinghuysen 64, is in the intensive care unit of the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield with multiple injuries. Stockbridge police chief William Obanheim said Morris's care was southbound on Rat 183 and the truck was westbound on Rat 102 when they collided. Clyde Keyes, the owner of E & I Trucking Co. was uninjured, but the force of the crash spun the truck around completely and sheared the side and roof off the car. Morris, a New York City native, lived at One Sutton Place in Springfield, Mass and spent summers at Brook, the family compound on West Street in Lenox. George Morris was a direct descendent of Revolutionary War financier Robert Morris, and Gouveneur Morris one of the founding fathers. He graduated from Groton School and Yale, and after studying art in Paris became the editor of a number of art publications. He has been an instructor at the Art Students League and was artist in residence at the St. John's College. Through 1966 he was director of the New York City of Music and Drama. He was founder of the American Association of Abstract Artists and the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors, and was a member of a number of other clubs and associations. Including the Lenox Club, which has been called "the most exclusive club in the world." He was the son of the late Newbold Morris, and Helen Schermerhorn Kingsland-Morris. His late brother, Newbold, was president of the Borough Council of New York City and a former park commissioner. A surviving brother Stephen V.C. Morris, a retired diplomat, is also a summer resident of the family estate in Lenox. The Searing - Stevens funeral home, Stockbridge, is in charge of local arrangements, which are incomplete.
