Ernest Morgenthaler, 94, of Rt 2 Box 1840, died Wednesday. Private services will be held Saturday in the McDonald Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Lieby officiating. Cremation will follow.
Born New Year's Day, 1870, in Switzerland, Mr. Morgenthaler homesteaded on Quillayute Priarie in 1881 with his parents.
He came to the United States with his family when he was two years old. The family settled at Uppersandusky, Ohio. The Morgenthalers moved west when Ernest was 18, settling in Seattle.
In 1893, young Morgenthaler married Sarah Slayton in Everett and brought his 17-year old bride 50 miles overland by horseback to his parents homestead. The later made their home in Bellingham.
Following Mrs. Morgenthaler's death in 1953, Mr. Morgenthaler came to Agnew to live with a daughter, Mrs. Carl Marquardt, and her husband, Dr. Marquardt.
Mr. Morgenthaler remained active there, enjoying his favorite pasttime, cutting firewood.
Survivors include four sons, A. W. Morgenthaler and O. E. Morgenthaler, both of Deming, E. E. Morgenthaler of Hayward, Calif, and R. C. Morgenthaler of Anacortes; three daughters, Mrs. Marquardt, Mrs. M. H. Nettles of Oakland, Calif, and Mrs. Steve Withers of Deming; eight grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Orthopedic Fund.
