Funeral services were held Sat., Nov. 11, 2000 at the First Baptist Church, Charles City, for Ellen M. (Mrs. Howard) Barrett, of Charles City. The Rev. Dr. S. Todd Yeaton and the Rev. Ruth Yeaton, pastors, officiated. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. She died Wed., Nov. 8, 2000 at the Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Ellen, the former Ellen Margaret Morey, was born Mar. 26, 1918 in rural Orchard, Mitchell County, the daughter of John and Ovelia (Beyatt) Morey. She graduated from Orchard High School in 1935. She then entered the former Iowa State Teachers College, (now UNI) and graduated with a Normal Training Degree in 1937. On Feb. 14, 1942, she was united in marriage to Howard W. Barrett.
She taught in many Floyd County country schools, and several Charles City department stores, taught GED classes through NIACC and traveled around northeast Iowa evaluating GED teachers. She retired from her life long love of teaching in 1989.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Eugene Morey, formerly of Osage; and two sisters, Katherine Barwick and Marian Mettner.
Those thankful for sharing her life include her husband, Howard of Charles City; four children and their spouses and five granddaughters, one grandson and one great-grandson.
