SUSSEX - Horace H. Moran, age 96, of Sussex, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2006. Horace was born in Rio, Wis., and attended grade school in Doylestown. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1928. He married Gladys Kraus whom he met in Lodi where she was a teacher. His first full year of teaching was in Alma, Wis., in 1934-35. Coach Moran was a mathematics teacher and basketball and baseball coach at Alma, Cuba City, West Salem, and Sussex Hamilton. He taught for 39 years, retiring from Sussex Hamilton after 12 years in 1974.
He lived in Sussex from 1962 until 2003, when he and Gladys moved to Oak Hill Terrace in Waukesha. His basketball teams won more than 400 games and he had many conference championships in most of the schools he coached at. He was elected to the Wisconsin High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983 and was honored as an outstanding teacher in the West Salem Hall of Fame in 2001. Coach Moran graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1933 where he majored in physical education and lettered in basketball.
He refereed basketball games, umpired baseball games, and officiated football games for years. He was an outstanding athlete as a young man. All those who knew him recognized his love of kids and education. His passion, however, was basketball, baseball, and coaching. His teams were always well prepared and competitive. He is remembered as a teacher that made math fun and relevant. He conducted his classes with discipline, fairness, patience, and a sense of humor. He will be remembered not only as a teacher and coach, but a true friend to all who knew him.
He had an immense love for his wife of 74 plus years, Gladys, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Gladys (nee Kraus); beloved father of Pat (Judith), Michaelee (Ernest) Hopp and Tom (Iris); grandpa of Kelli and Kerri Moran, Michael (Kara), Patrick (Colleen), Jill (Dennis) Mullane, Andrew (Lisa), Sean (Kim) Hopp and Tamara (Ray) Washio; great-grandpa of Patrick John, Margaret, M. Luke, Nathan and Lauren Moran, Sophia and Isaac Hopp, Zoey Washio, and Madeleine and Miles Moran; and brother of Walter (Eleanor). Those who knew him were all the better for having him as part of their lives.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the SCHMIDT & BARTELT FUNERAL HOME, Sussex. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until time of services. Private burial held at Boscobel Cemetery in Boscobel.
