She was the wife of Judge James Woodson Bates.
He came to Arkansas in 1819 to establish his law career. He was appointed a Territorial Judge in 1825 by President Adams. He was buried in the family cemetery at Moore's Rock just below Van Buren. His grave was never marked.
After Judge Bates death Mrs. Bates lived with her sister, Mrs. Jonathan McGee. She was originally buried in the McGee family lot on their home place, but later
with members of the McGee family, were re-interred at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith.
