Although his tombstone claims he served in the Civil War with "Co. C, 1st Regt Pa Vol," no record of military service was found. "1st Regt Pa Vols" implies the 1st Pennsyvlania Infantry, but he was not found in Co. C's roster in that regiment or in any of the other eight regiments that have been referred to over the years as "1st Pennsylvania Volunteers." His obituaries make no mention of military service.
