Marion P. Moore

Marion Penelope Moore, 76, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at City Hospital.

Born Oct. 8, 1936, in Spring Hope, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John Alva May and Menda (Wheeless) May.

She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Local Chapel 264 where she held state and local offices, as well as the UDC main office in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Moore was instrumental in purchasing a lot at Green Hill Cemetery to retrieve and re-intern the remains of Confederate soldiers killed in local battles. She was in charge of the local UDC Scholarship Programs.

Mrs. Moore was an active member of the local Martinsburg Lioness Club, Women of the Moose and the American Legion.

Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Spring Hope High School and Wake Forest University School of Music and graduated with honors. She was head majorette for four years where she received national recognition with her troop appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Mrs. Moore was a teacher with the North Carolina School System.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Lee R. Moore Sr.; four stepsons, the Rev. Howard Edgar Moore, Lee R. Moore Jr., John J. Moore and Dr. William D. Moore; grandchildren, Abigail, Allison, Meredith, Ned, Davis and Keith Moore; and her beloved dogs. She is also survived by her care giver, Linda Cushwa.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Perry May.

Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Brown Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark C. Mooney officiating. Interment will be held at Rosedale Cemetery.
