Kathryn Kay (Moore) Calter, 78 years old, died unexpectedly July 11th at Good Samaritan Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Kay was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Calter Jr. for 42 years, in 2002 she married George Matthews. Daughter of the late Joseph and Florence (McKinnon) Moore, sister of Barbara Ford of Brighton and the late Joseph Moore of Randolph. Born and raised in Brookline and south Boston, she made her home in Avon for the past 54 years. She was a graduate of St. Marys High School in Brookline class of 1949. Following high school, she was employed in the clerical union for the MBTA. After getting married to Tom and having a family, she returned to work once all of her children were in school. She enjoyed working part time mothers hours as a waitress at various local diners. In 1978 she began working as a dietician at Pilgrim Center in Braintree, a facility for criminally troubled teenagers, operated by the Archdiocese of Boston. Throughout her years of service she always found a way to overlook the bad and only see the good in all of her boys, who lovingly referred to her as Ma. Prior to her 8 year battle with Alzheimers, she was an active member and past president of the Avon VFW Ladies Auxiliary, St. Michaels Church Sodality and volunteered her time to many charitable events. She played a vital part in the success of several Christmas Bazaars held at St. Michaels Church. She was an avid Red Sox fan and even during her final hours, she was watching a game. While raising 6 children and taking on the roles of wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, community and church worker, she always had time for friends and fun. She enjoyed knitting, blitz bingo, bowling on the Avonettes league, Friday night girls card club and vacationing, especially to Aruba.
