Herbert T. Moore, 86, passed away on May 9th in Anaheim, California.
Not many can say that they danced with Ingrid Bergman or learned to swim from Tarzan (aka actor Johnny Weissmuller), but Herbert Moore could. He was born on September 25, 1925, in Detroit Michigan, to Warner and Ellen Moore and though the two highlights mentioned occurred during his service in the United State Marine Corps in World War II, in which he was a radio operator, his most memorable moment was his participation in the assault and capture of Iwo Jima as a member of the 5th Marine Division. After witnessing the raising of the two flags on Mount Suribachi, Mr. Moore's Division sailed on to Hawaii and ultimately participated in the occupation of Japan.
After Mr. Moore returned home, he married Joan Coleman and moved to California spending the next 59 years as a Master Craftsman in his own upholstery business. He also taught the craft in a local college, and was honored to have had one of his personal heroes, actor John Wayne, as a customer.
Considered a friendly and likable guy, Mr. Moore's lifelong passion for cars, especially Ford makes, included running an early car club called the Deuces and restoring vintage car interiors that included Gloria Swanson's Rolls Royce and Edd "Kookie" Byrnes' roadster. In his short retirement, Mr. Moore enjoyed spending time with his family and going on local day trips, often in search of his favorite dessert, a chocolate ice cream cone. He will be missed.
Mr. Moore survived his pre-deceased sons William and Patrick, and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan; his children, Linda Bandieramonte, Anthony Moore, Judith Moore, James Moore, and his eight grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Tania, Brianna, Koah, Cheyenne, Harrison, and Miranda.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17th at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange. Hilgenfeld Mortuary
