Born in St. Peter, Minnesota, son of Mjr. Thomas and Sarah Montgomery, George grew up in the Hamline area of St. Paul Minnesota after his family moved from St. Peter to St. Paul where his father was active in real estate development, insurance and local politics.
His father was a Civil war hero and very active in both the GAR and other veteran groups, as well as the Masons, the Templars and state politics. He was also a longtime city Alderman in St. Paul and a supporter of both the Hamline Methodist Church and Hamline University.All the Montgomery children-boys and girls--graduated from secondary school and attended Hamline University, as both parents strongly supported education and civic involvement.
Young George was drawn to military service --he joined the campus militia training corps at his college (Hamline University) and enlisted in the Spanish-American War, serving in the Phillipines. He was also drafted in World War I.
He returned to St Paul after service and worked in the real estate and insurance business of his father in the Hamline area.
He eventually retired to California where he died in 1931.
