Samuel enlisted as a private in the 79th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry (USA) on 16 Sep 1861 in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania and remained with the 79th until his death on 30 Jul 1864. He died during Major General William T Sherman's Atlanta Campaign during the summer of 1864 in Vinning, Cobb, Georgia, USA and was originally buried at Vinnings. After the War, the Union soldiers who were buried at Vinnings were relocated to the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Cobb, Georgia, USA.

However, Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers erroneously claims he discharged by surgeon's certificate July 30, 1864, and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file, while listing that he died on that date, claims disease as the cause. The death register clearly shows that he died from a gunshot wound. The discovery of the total truth must await the post-covid-19 re-opening of the National Archives and access to his compiled military service records.
