PIONEER CARTHAGE MAN SUCCUMBS TODAY

End Comes After Long Illness - Came Here 50 Years Ago


H. A. Montague, 70 years old, resident of Carthage for 50 years, died at 1:15 o'clock this afternoon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. George Ollivant south of Carthage on the Grand Avenue road, with whom he had made his home several years.
Mr. Montague has been in failing health the last seven years. He suffered a stroke of paralysis last Sunday noon and since that time he had been in an unconscious state.

Born February 23, 1858, in Keokuk, Iowa, Mr. Montague came to Carthage when he was about 20 years of age, and had made this his home since. He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Sarah Roof of Carthage who passed away about 16 years ago. He was later married to Miss Martha Garrett of Carthage who died several years ago in Kansas City. The last seven years he had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ollivant. Mr. Montague was for many years engaged as a painter and paper hanger in Carthage. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic lodge.

Surviving are a son, R. H. Montague, of St. Joseph, MO and grand-daughter, Ruth Virginia Montague of Joplin, and two brothers, M. M. Montague of Keokuk, Iowa and Mert Montague of Denver, Colorado.
