S, 48th Infantry, Illinois on 2 Sept 1861 (these are the actual dates but they don't make sense as they aren't consecutive); Promoted to Full Adjutant (Officer responsible for correspondence) on 1 Jan 1863; Mustered out as 1st Lt, Adjutant on 29 Jan 1865.

His brother Christian Chapman Monroe also fought in Co. B, 48th Infantry Reg't, Illinois, as a 2nd Lt. He was killed in "The Battle of Atlanta", GA on 21 Jul 1864.
