Barbara Mockel passed from this world to her heavenly home on March 6, 2013 at the age of 95. She was surrounded by family in her home at Birchwood.
Barbara was born in Cogswell, N.D. on Oct. 11, 1917 and grew up in Lewistown, Mont., the daughter of Elmer and Mary Soule. Her father owned a neighborhood grocery store adjacent to their home across the street from the city park in Lewistown. It was a perfect neighborhood to raise three active children who loved life in the park. Barbara enjoyed swimming and was a lifeguard at the city pool. All three children also helped their parents in the grocery store, where they learned life long lessons of working hard, saving for a rainy day, and helping your neighbor in need, especially during the depression years. When the weekend came though, Barbara, her two brothers and their parents were avid outdoor people. They camped and picnicked at every opportunity. Climbing mountains, exploring old mines and caves, and gathering wild berries were great pleasures, along with following roads and trails to the very end.
Barbara graduated from Fergus County High School in 1935, worked to earn college tuition, and then attended Montana State College in 1938-39. In 1940, Barb married Heinie Mockel, and Bozeman became their home. Heinie and Barb had two daughters, Marcia and Linda.
Barb took great pleasure in supporting Heinie and the girls in all their activities and interests. In the early years of their marriage, when Heinie had a dance band, Barb developed a love for the music he loved. When he opened Hartman-Mockel Men's Store, Barb supported him in the business he loved, and she always encouraged his avid love of golf. For the girls, she was a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, and supporter of all kinds of music lessons and school activities. Barb was a seamstress and later a secretary at MSU. After retiring, she indulged her new-found pleasures of weaving, quilting and other hand work. She also was an active participant in water aerobics. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Eastern Star, Chapter BU of P.E.O., AOPi, Bible studies, Interfaith Quilters, Salvation Army Auxiliary, and Weavers Guild. While living at Aspen Pointe and Birchwood, Barb enjoyed her Bridge, Pinochle, and Bingo groups.
Barb is survived by her daughters, Marcia Cox (Pat Sisk) of Garland, Texas, and Linda (Larry) Hughes of Bozeman; five grandchildren, Scott Cox, California, Chris Cox, Alaska, Kim Cox, Texas, Jeff (Jen) Hughes, Algonquin, Ill., and Nancy Hughes (Scott Sneddon), Billings; seven great-grandchildren, Lindsey Decker, Tristan Cox, Olivia and Ella Hughes, Greta, and Ava and Owen Sneddon; nieces, Marilyn Mockel, Bozeman, Carol Jones McMinnville, Ore., Bette (Everett) March, Manhattan, Monte Jean (Lawrence) Broadwater, Townsend, Marian Hillyer, Coto de Caza, Calif., Bonnie (Bob) Karlsen, Patrice (Royce) Stone, and Dianne, all of California; nephew, John (Betty) Mockel of Townsend; and grand-nieces and nephews including Peggy (Bill) Ryan of Bozeman and their children, Wade, Kyla and Caitlin, Brad (Kim) Tolson, Dawn Andrade, Kim Peterson, and David (Leann) Peterson and their families. Barb's family and friends were her greatest source of enjoyment. She was preceded in death by her husband, Heinie; brothers, Lyman and Clinton Soule; and her parents, Elmer and Mary Soule.
