Alice S. Mittelstadt, a lifelong resident of Owatonna, died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Cedarview Nursing Home. She was 93 years old.

She was born on the Fisher family farm north of Owatonna, on Jan. 20, 1916 to Adolph J. Skalicky and Mary Fisher Skalicky. The family moved to 146 E. McKinley in 1918 during the influenza epidemic. She lived in that house or next door nearly all her life, except for several years in the 1940s and the last four years of her life.

She attended St. Mary''s School through the eighth grade, transferred to the Owatonna High School where she graduated in 1933. She attended OHS''s Teacher''s Training Department and graduated from that program in 1935. She taught in Steele County rural schools for seven years in Districts 17, 2 and 40.

She married Clarence C. Mittelstadt on June 18, 1940. She worked at Josten''s during World War II and worked on the Norton bomb sights. After the war, she worked at the Jolly Co. leaving that job to care for family members. She was a homemaker, caretaker and volunteer until 1961 when she began working part-time at Duffy''s. She left there in 1966 for Federated Insurance Company and worked there until she retired at age 62 to spend more time with her husband. He preceded her in death in 1981.

During the 1950s and 1960''s, she was the financial secretary of the Women''s Catholic Order of Foresters. She was the president of the Women''s Deanery of St. Joseph Catholic Church as well. She was very involved with the Parent Teacher Association and was the Roosevelt PTA president, the Owatonna PTA Council president twice, the District 2 PTA vice president and president and served as an office of the state organization. She was involved with the American Field Service and her family hosted an exchange student, Costas Ioanidis of Greece in 1959-60.

Mrs. Mittelstadt served as a trustee of the Owatonna Public Library from 1960 to 1972. She was also the board president. She served on the regional Southeast Library Cooperating (SELCO) board from 1972-76 and was its president from 1974-76.

She was the superintendent of the St. John Lutheran Church Sunday School, served on the St. John Lutheran Church board of trustees for two terms, 1978-84, and was the chair of the congregation from 1984-86. She was the first woman at the church to hold that position. She was a member of the Crusaders and she and her husband spent many years working at the Crusaders parking lot during the Steele County Free Fair.

Over the years, she was a member of the Rural School Teachers Association, the Owatonna Senior Center and the Steele County Historical Society. She volunteered for the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. She traveled all over the U.S. with Mary and Lloyd Zolnowsky and she visited her Greek son and his family in Athens. She said she had made enough chocolate cakes with chocolate frosting to go around the world.

She had a lifelong interest in family, education, reading, travel, cats and dogs, needlework, volunteerism and her "kids", not all of whom are biological, until about her 89th birthday when her memory dimmed. She moved into Cedarview Nursing Home in late 2005 after spending a year in assisted living.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Janet and Dennis Tippett of Rapid City, SD., one son, Ted J., Owatonna; one brother-in-law Lloyd Zolnowsky, Owatonna; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Mittelstadt and Alice Skalicky, both of Owatonna, 12 nieces and nephews, many grandnieces and nephews, cousins, four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren, and many others of her extended family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; one brother, George Skalicky; two sisters, Mary Zolnowsky and Dorothy Kaczowski, and many cousins and friends.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 4pm to 7pm and on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 10am to 11am. Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 11:00am at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Klawiter officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Owatonna Public Library or the St. John Church Foundation would be appreciated.
