Gwendolyn Christian Mitchell, born April 19, 1917, passed from this life on August 9, 2012. She was born in Grove, Oklahoma, to Holland and Bertha Christian. As a young woman, she moved to Tulsa where she met her future husband, Ray. A few years later, Ray's twin brother Rex married Gwen's sister Genne. In their retirement years, the couples lived next door to each other and shared such good times. After the passing of their husbands, Gwen and Genne made their homes at Montereau retirement community in Tulsa. This petite woman stood tall with kindness, thoughtfulness, determination and independent spirit and was adored by all who knew her. Always gracious and always generous, Gwen was the consummate giver of herself. Her radiant smile, characteristic of her good humor mixed with a dash of mischief, will be missed by her family which includes her son Phil Mitchell and his wife Marcia of Tulsa; daughter Carol Porter Orr and her husband Bill of Oklahoma City, granddaughter Sarah Porter Osborn and her husband Kelton of Denver; grandson Jess Porter and his wife Leslie of Little Rock; Missy Mitchell of Tulsa; great-granddaughters Gwendolyn Osborn, Claire and Abbie Porter, and Kaylee Mitchell; and step-grandchildren Shep Orr and Tasha Orr. She is also survived by her sister Genne Mitchell. Gwen was a member of Boston Avenue Methodist Church, current board member of Oklahoma Investment Company, former owner and operator of Phoenix Insurance Agency, and a longtime volunteer for the Little Light House. We appreciate our family and friends for the many kind ways they helped us through this difficult time. Thank you to Saint Francis Hospice and the Montereau staff for their tender loving care of our entire family. A 2:00 p.m. memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 11 in the Chapel at Montereau, 6800 South Granite. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Little Light House, 5120 East 36th Street, Tulsa, OK 74135, or Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, 1301 South Boston Avenue, Tulsa, OK 74119.
