Stroke of Paralysis Proves Fatal to Mrs. Sarah Cochran Sunday At Daughter's Home Son Arrived from Seattle, Wash., Two Hours After Mother's Death
One of the saddest of deaths, and which will bring sorrow into the hearts of everyone, even though slightly acquainted with her, occurred Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, when Mrs. Sarah A. Cochran passed into the home of her Maker. Mrs. Cochran's death resulted from a stroke of paralysis which she suffered last Wednesday morning. While doing her work in the kitchen at her home about 7:30 in the morning the stroke seized her. No one was in the kitchen at the time and when her daughter, Mrs. Weldy, come over to visit with her she found her mother lying on the floor in an unconscious condition. Mrs. Cochran rallied slightly and was removed to the Weldy home, where she was under continual care. No improvement could be made in her condition, however, and it was decided to send for the son, S. M. Cochran, of Seattle, Wash. He immediately left for the bedside of his mother, arriving here at 5:15 o'clock Sunday evening, but death had preceded him in the race by two hours, she having passed away shortly after 3 o'clock.
Mrs. Cochran was born in Bedford County, Pa., February 2, 1822, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mills, being one of a family of twelve boys and girls. Her early childhood was passed at her birthplace, where she also secured her education.
In 1843 she was united in the holy bonds of wedlock to John R. Cochran. To this union were born six children, three of them, two daughters and one son, having preceded the mother to the great beyond, while the other three, Mrs. Rebecca Brown of Peterson, S. M. Cochran of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. C. M. Weldy of this city still survive. The family moved to Adams County in 1853, settling in Kirkland Township. In 1886 the father passed away. Shortly after this Mrs. Cochran gave up the farm life and moved to this city where she has resided for the past thirty-five years. Mrs. Cochran was one of the most faithful members of the Methodist Church, being an ever-ready and willing worker in any department for which she was assigned and always working for the betterment of her associates and those in need in such a manner that completely captivated and formed an impenetrable bond of friendship with those who became acquainted with her. Never was she heard to murmur of the lot cast upon her, should the work be disagreeable, always endeavoring to her utmost to do as He would want her to do, and thus her entire life was filled with such lovable traits. Before the stroke came upon her last Wednesday, Mrs. Cochran was feeling in exceptionally fine heath for a lady of her years and a week ago Sunday was seen in her regular place at church, apparently enjoying the best of health.
She is survived by two sisters of the family of twelve, they being Mrs. Betsy Severns of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Mrs. Levannis Clark of East Union, Ohio. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at ten o'clock (standard) from the Methodist Church. Interment will be made in the Beery Cemetery.
The body will lie in state from 7 to 8 o'clock this evening and from 8:30 to 9:30 tomorrow morning at the C. M. Weldy home, 517 Marshall Street.
