Dama was born to Fredrick and Emily Durfee Mills of Lansing, MI. She was one of three girls in a family of four children. Her father and his father before him ran the Mills Dry Goods Store in Lansing. Her brother eventually took it over until he sold it in 1955 unpon his retirement. Dama lived at home until she went to Detroit to work. She told me she'd been a model, which was certainly possible. She was tall, willowy, and undoubtedly attractive in her 20's.

In Detroit, she met and married George B. Handy. Since her husband was in the war, she had to maintain her home and raise their three children.

She saw two of her children marriaged and enjoyed her grandson. Dama was very familiar with the area of Detroit where they lived and sold real estate in her later years.

When she died in 1973, her children were scattered. One daughter taught school in MI, one was married in WI but would be moving to TX, and her son was married and living in Dallas. She's buried near her husband.
