She was born on November 17, 1917 in Danville, Illinois to Paul and Isabelle (Strauss) Esslinger. At age 13 her family moved to Peru, where she spent most of her life.
The 1935 graduate of Peru High School, Mills was the credit manager at Montgomery Ward from 1942 to 1947, as well as worked in the credit department of Miami County Farm Bureau from 1945 to 1947.
She married Myron E. Mills in 1942, and partnered with him in his business, Mills Refrigeration. He passed away in 2000. Mills was very active in PTA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and in the Main Street United Methodist Church, where she maintained her membership since 1945. She taught Sunday School, led the junior high youth fellowship and started a Bible study.
In 1987, after her children were grown, Mills returned to work at American Stationery.
Mills is survived by two daughters, Emily Rico and husband Nicholas, Fort Wayne, and Catherine Royer and husband Tom, Adrian, Michigan; son, Myron Mills and wife, Kyle, Keller, Texas; sister, Barbara Popejoy and husband Robert, Sugar Land, Texas; and granddaughters, Lauren and Corinne Rico; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Aside from her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Esslinger and William Esslinger; and a sister, Annabelle Esslinger Stewart.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel, Peru, with Pastor Steven Ailes officiating.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, as well as at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church Education Fund, Peru.
