Mrs. Betty Jean Cox, 87, of Lebanon, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at her residence.
Mrs. Cox was born Jan. 18, 1924, in Indianapolis, a daughter of the now-deceased Lemuel and Helen (Cartwright) Miller. She was reared and educated in Indianapolis, where she graduated from Tech High School.
She married James Wesley Cox Jr. on Jan. 1, 1943, in Indianapolis. Mr. Cox passed away on July 1, 2002. She was introduced to her husband by his cousin, Joseph Cox, who was the minister at Brightwood Church of Christ.
Mrs. Cox worked for Ace Hardware at the Devington and Nora stores, and later at the Chambers Ace Hardware in Lebanon.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved taking care of children, many of whom became part of her extended family. Her retirement years were spent in Largo, Fla., where she enjoyed cooking fish that her husband caught in the Tampa Bay area. She also enjoyed playing Euchre with her friends from church, and her cousins and in-laws.
Mrs. Cox was a member of Lebanon Church of Christ.
Survivors include five children, James D. (Jane) Cox of Keller, Texas, John R. (Judy) Cox of Thorntown, Deborah J. (Bruce) Clark of Brownsburg, Janice R. (Carl) Winkler of Indianapolis and Jerry A. Cox of Lebanon; one sister, Barbara Carr of Alabama; and 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Steve Jaggers officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
