GRAY, Carrie Miller, 103, died quietly in her home on Monday, March 4, 2013. After graduating from Harrisonburg State Teacher's College in 1930, she taught in elementary school in Virginia for 39 years, in Warm Springs, in Richmond, and at Ocean View School in Norfolk. She was happily married to William Houston Gray, who died in 1966. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Ascension, where her grandmother was a founding member. She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Phelan; grandsons, Andrew and Thomas Phelan; and cousins, Bill Willey and Edward Peabody. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Westminster Canterbury for their continuing kindness over many years. A service to celebrate the life of Carrie Gray will be held on Thursday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension, 405 Talbot Hall Road, Norfolk. A reception will follow. After the reception, a brief graveside service will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Wednesday, March 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel at 1501 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk.
