JONES WALLACE MILLER Sr.

Dr. Jones Wallace Miller, Sr. of Enterprise, passed away Friday, November 20, 2009 at his home in Enterprise. He was 81. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 23, 2009 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church Monday from 9:00 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church Building Fund, 302 N. Main Street, Enterprise, AL 36330 or Day Spring Hospice, PO Box 311246, Enterprise, AL 36331. Dr. Miller was born April 25, 1928 in Enterprise, Coffee County, AL. He was the founder of WKMX Radio, Inc., which he established in 1974; and former Chairman of the Board, Scenic Cable Network & Production, Inc. He was a Sergeant in the US Air Force and served for 3 years. Dr. Miller was a graduate of Enterprise High School. He also graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. Degree in Agriculture in 1955. He then received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1957 from Auburn University. After graduation, he practiced Veterinary medicine in Enterprise, AL for 20 years, 1957 until 1977. Wallace was on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Higher Education Loan Corporation; delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in Atlantic City in 1964; Chicago in 1968; and New York in 1976; Alabama State Senator for six years, 1976-1982, representing 4 counties (Houston, Coffee, Geneva and Covington). He was Chairman, State of Alabama Dairy Commission for 12 years. Dr. Miller was a member of the Enterprise Lions Club for 41 years where he served as president in 1962-63; in 1991 he was selected as an outstanding alumnus of Auburn University; recipient of the Dag-Hammarskjold Peace Award, 1963; served as president of the Alabama-Florida Boy Scout Council where he received the Silver Beaver Award in 1991. While practicing Veterinary Medicine he was a member of the Southeast Veterinary Medicine Association; Alabama Veterinary Medicine Association; and American Veterinary Medicine Association. He also was a member of Auburn University Alumni Association, Coffee County Cattlemen's Association, Association of the US Army, Chamber of Commerce in Enterprise, AL where he served as an officer on the Board of Directors and was the president for two years. He was a member and active Deacon, First Baptist Church of Enterprise, and also served as a Sunday School teacher for 15 years; he served as Chairman of Building and Maintenance Committee and was a member of the Personnel Committee and Ushering Committee. He was a Mason, Shriner and York Rite Member of the Alcazar Temple in Montgomery, AL. He also served on committees for practically every charity organization including the United Way, Heart Fund, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, etc. Dr. Miller was the recipient of the Alabama Broadcasters Association's Life-Time Achievement Award, 1990 and recipient of the Alabama Broadcasters "2001 Broadcaster of the Year" for the State of Alabama which was the highest award given by the state association. Dr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas G. & Lula Maude (Jones) Miller; a brother, Dr. Thomas M. Miller. Survivors include his wife, Anne Watkins Miller, Enterprise, AL; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Michelle Miller Plagenhoef and Dr. Jeff Plagenhoef, Dothan, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Jones Wallace (Al) Miller, Jr. owner of Miller Alarm and Allison Chancey Miller, Enterprise, AL; 5 grandchildren, Nicholas Plagenhoef, Mad-elin Plagenhoef and Alex Plagenhoef, Jones Wallace Miller III and Anna Catherine Miller; 2 sisters, Fleeta Meredith, Enterprise, AL, Mary Smith, Santa Rosa Beach, FL; brother, Alex H. Miller, Enterprise, AL. Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory, (334) 393-2273, is in charge of arrangements.
